Maryland home inspections have most likely been in existance probably as long as houses themeslves. The buyer would often ask someone they knew, such as a parent, builder, or sometimes even a friend, to determine the condition of the property they were planning to buy or sell.

All too often, that judgement was based on a quick run through, with little understanding of what needed to be evaluated, and quite often someone not familiar at all with the building trades. These were simpler times, using simple construction techniques for the most part, and as such, evaluations rendered were predictably simple.
That was then and this is now. Times have changed and subsequently so have home inspections. Fundamentally, the main focus of a home inspection is to inform the customer of any major defects in the condition of the property, integral or influencing peripheral parts or systems of the property. We also believe it is equally important to present in our reports the parts of the property which are good. We know that an educated customer is more likely to make a wise decision. The customer would be misguided if we were to only focus on the problems and concerns we found with the property. Including in our report both the good and the bad is of utmost importance in the final decision making process.

Mobile Broadband Will Change the Way Manufacturers Make Devices

Filed under: Consumers, Tech + Life, Telco — admin at 9:35 pm on Tuesday, January 19, 2010

ABI Research has brought out new reports showing how the existing systems for bringing internet connectivity to the latest devices will not be viable in the coming years. The report says that the current business models will not work as demand grows for such devices.

According to predictions by analysts, a huge surge will be seen in the demand for mobile broadband enabled devices in the near future. About 58 million such devices will hit the markets by the end of 2012, it is believed. Given these predictions, industry sources believe that this demand will prompt a change in the way business is done for manufacturers of such devices.

In order to make an internet ready device available in the market, the manufacturer will have to bring in a system based on some form of coalition with a service provider. Be it long term internet plans or limited period dongle packages, some from of tie up has to be established between internet service providers and manufacturers. To incorporate this into the system, the very business model will have to undergo a change.

As of now, the increased demand for PNDs and e-book readers is causing a shift in the thinking of manufacturers to accommodate internet connectivity seamlessly prior to marketing. Jeff Orr from ABI Research says that this change in purchasing trend is leading to a change in business models. The way these changes are incorporated in the industry will define the growth here over the next few years, he said.

GPS - Never Get Lost Again With Satellite Navigation

Filed under: Telco — admin at 1:03 am on Tuesday, January 5, 2010

When we travel, we tend to think of the destination, rather than the roads we take to get there. After all, who wouldn’t rather dream of the vacation as opposed to the hours spent in a cramped car with the kids asking every few minutes, “Are we there yet?”

But, the truth is, we have to know where we are to get to where we’re going. That is why having a Global Positioning System (more commonly called GPS) is so essential. This cyber map will always be aware of your movements and location, allowing you the security of never having to second-guess directions.

Does this scenario sound familiar? You have traveled down a dirt road, filled with more ruts than dirt, only to enter a town whose biggest
attraction is a gas station with inside restrooms. You didn’t want to be here, but your innate sense of direction (or lack thereof) coupled with a map that can only be described as adequate, brought you. Now, you have to either turn around or rely on the directions of a man who was more interested in reading the paper than listening to you. It is a tiresome situation, to put it lightly, and one you should not have to experience.

So what difference would a GPS system make? First of all, you would always know exactly where you are. This satellite locator is the only complete one on the word, meaning: the directions it gives you will be based only on the best and most accurate information. Secondly, a GPS system can be personalized. Unlike a map that just gives roads and the occasional extra information, a GPS can be trained to show you local attractions, hotels, restaurants, airports, etc. It can also become your personal address book, storing the roads and routes important to your daily life. With that, you will always be aware of which turn to make and when to do it. No more missing your exit by being distracted; a GPS system will actually tell you to turn.

Because of these amenities, the GPS has quickly risen to the level of ‘needed’ item. Not only does it assure that you will always know where you are, but it also brings a level of safety to drivers. No more stumbling about the street, hoping to find the turn you need. A GPS system will always let you know when the time is right to turn.

Of course, it must be noted that there are different types of systems and, the cheaper you buy, the less it will be able to do. Though it is usually thought to pay less and hope for the best, in this case, it is wiser to invest in a more equipped system, or at least one more tailored to your lifestyle. That way, you can guarantee yourself a higher level of security when it comes to traveling. Whether going about town or heading across country, you should always know where you are.

Motorrad Navigator II GPS Navigation System

Filed under: Telco — admin at 5:00 pm on Saturday, January 2, 2010

Owners of BMW motorcycles have a new technology available to them to provide up to the minute directions and navigation throughout all of Europe. BMW’s latest GPS unit for their motorcycles is a huge step up from their previous model. This model features an upgraded memory chip, up to 2 GB from 512 MB. The model also comes with a road map covering all of Eastern Europe installed right out of the box. This is a great feature because prior to this model you would have to take the unit to your pc and download the appropriate maps onto the unit. With this model you simple have to mount the unit to your motorcycle and attach the battery cable and you are ready to take off on the road.

Riders will find the new touch screen a vast improvement over the previous model and it has been retuned for easier use with gloved hands. The unit has been rated for use in snow and in rain, and against extreme heat and cold. The units increased memory and processors allow for virtually instantaneous updates of information and position. As with the previous model it still provides the rider with elapsed time, estimated time to destination, current speed, average speed and top speed. This models positioning is extremely accurate as it pulls information from twelve different satellites when coordinating your position. Most GPS units only use the information of four satellites and this gives the BMW model a greater advantage at calculating your exact position on the globe.

As for drivers or riders of non-BMW bikes, this unit can be used with any vehicle or motorcycle and will require minimal mounting and wiring. For an automobile it comes equipped with a cigarette lighter plug and can be mounted fairly easily to most vehicles. Pedestrians can also use this unit with its battery powered option. This product is available at all BMW dealerships and online at the BMW website.

Ofcom Might Not Get T-Mobile and Orange to Surrender Spectrum

Filed under: Consumers, Tech + Life, Telco — admin at 10:57 am on Monday, December 14, 2009

The Financial Times World Telecoms Conference witnessed a clear indication on part of Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile and France Telecom’s Orange that they are not willing to give up their part of spectrum for the proposed merger of the two, as they do not find a reason for doing the same.

The merger that was announced two months back had raised many speculations especially with respect to the approach of regulatory authorities, as the merged entity is expected to own an immense part of the present spectrum. It was speculated that the merged entity would have to relinquish a part of its spectrum as dictated by Ofcom.

According to statistics, the merged entity will own over 50% of the broadcast spectrum in addition to a market share of around 37%. If fact, the expected broadcast spectrum is estimated to be over 170MHz, which is in sharp contrast with 3’s 15MHz and Vodafone’s 76MHz (click for a broadband comparison).

The Chief Operating Officer of Deutsche Telekom explained in the conference that the companies do not think it is necessary to give up their share of the broadcast spectrum just to please Ofcom and get the required approval. This may look like taking a bargaining position in the whole deal, but the final allocation of the 900MHz spectrum is yet to be seen.

Telecom Companies Write To Government against its Recent Anti-Piracy Proposal

Filed under: Consumers, Tech + Life, Telco — admin at 9:40 am on Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Top telecom companies have been so put off by the government’s recent proposal to discontinue broadband membership in order to combat internet piracy that they have written an open letter addressed to the government.

The letter written together by Ian Livingston of BT, Tom Alexander of Orange UK, Charles Dunstone of TalkTalk, Deborah Prince of Which?, Ed Mayo of Consumer Focus and Jim Killock of Open Rights Group was published in The Times newspaper, and it questioned the government’s devised way to fight banned filesharing.

According to these executives who enjoy powerful positions within their companies, this move by the government will harm consumer. It will also reduce the free flow of new services and will endanger the rights enjoyed by the broadband UK consumers.

The letter went ahead and declared that consumers should not be accused without substantial proof, and that an extra-judicial process must be prevented at any cost. A consumer must be allowed to exercise his right to a fair trial, else innocent people will end up suffering for no fault of theirs.

The letter also said that asking internet service providers to pay to carry out and maintain these regulations was not warranted, as it would mean charging customers more for the services. This is not right, as many customers do not even indulge in illegal filesharing in the first place.

Charles Dunstone, CEO of TalkTalk, asked for content providers, internet service providers and consumer groups to jointly fight against this proposal made by the government. He appealed to them to develop ideas to give a strong reply to the government and come out victorious in the fight against the government’s unfair scheme to terminate services in order to battle piracy. He also wants to work out a plan to save consumers from any extra-judicial measures.

T-Mobile Brings Mobile Broadband to Train Commuters

Filed under: Consumers, Tech + Life, Telco — admin at 10:28 am on Thursday, May 7, 2009

Thanks to the efforts of T-Mobile and Virgin trains, passengers can now surf the net while they are travelling on Virgin’s West Coast Main Line. The two companies will be hooking the trains up with WiFi hotspots, allowing commuters to access mobile broadband.

The West Coast Main Line will be the first to get equipped with the new service. The line runs between southern Scotland and London and goes through the West Midlands and the North West. It carries 22.5 million passengers every year. The 52 Pendolino trains run by Virgin would get the service first, followed by the 21 Super Voyager trains by mid summer.

First class passengers will get the service free of charge, and so will T-Mobile ‘pay monthly’ subscribers. The rest of the passengers can simply buy surfing time from T-Mobile and then access the service from their WiFi enabled devices (click for info on free laptop with broadband).

The entertainment and Internet Head at T-Mobile, Richard Warmsley, said that the company was looking to provide the customers every opportunity to connect via mobile broadband, which has been rising in popularity recently. He said the new service was significant not only because it would be free for existing pay monthly customers but also because anyone would be able to use it no matter which network they were subscribed to.

Nomad Digital is once again collaborating with T-Mobile on this project. The company specializes in providing data services to the transport industry. Nomad Digital has also partnered with T-Mobile in the past for providing pioneering services like the first ever on-train broadband access, on the London to Brighton route and the Heathrow Express trains.

Free Laptop Mobile Broadband Contracts

Filed under: Consumers, Tech + Life, Telco — admin at 8:44 am on Friday, December 26, 2008

There is a new advantage to mobile broadband right now and that is the fact that you get free laptop mobile broadband contracts where you basically get a free laptop or notebook with every contract of the mobile broadband from a network provider. I found all the info I needed on Broadbandgenie.co.uk.

One of the greatest things about this bargain deal, in my opinion, is that you can make use of the internet that you have signed up to straight away. We are all very impatient people and the reality of pulling your new mobile broadband dongle out of the box alongside a brand new and shiny laptop that was completely free of charge is something that is too impossible to walk away from.

Although the mobile broadband dongles can be used with normal PC’s, this kind of defies the point of having such a moveable kind of internet. This mobile internet combined with a free laptop mobile contract offers not only value for money but also a great deal more flexibility and comfort while you are surfing the net.

The ability to use it anywhere you wish can be collectively shared with the fact that you are getting a brand new gadget or toy and this reduces the expense of having to pay out for a new laptop.

What Direction Will VoIP Take Going Forward?

Filed under: Tech + Life, Telco — admin at 4:21 am on Friday, October 3, 2008

It seems that nothing can stop the runaway success of Voice over IP. Driven by increasingly widely available low cost broadband VoIP has become one of the fastest-growing applications on the Internet. But apart from cheap calls in the UK, there are other factors which have contributed to this hugely popular way of making calls. There is clearly a trend toward more innovative and more mobile services and this looks likely to ensure that demand for Voice over IP continues to increase. It is estimated that there are already around four million VoIP UK users in the UK, not counting business subscriptions.
Industry insiders point to the emergence of ADSL broadband connections that do not require line rental for a standard phone line (naked ADSL), and number portability between conventional and IP phone services as the two key developments that will bring elevate the profile of VoIP to new heights.

In fact the effect VoIP has had has been so pronounced that some have suggested that it may not be long before users can dispose of their traditional landline telephones completely in favour of a broadband phone.

Taking a more practical view, there are certain things that will need to be addressed before that can happen. In the UK VoIP providers like Vonage or VoIPTalk will have to scrutinise both security and ease of use, as well as continue to deliver a convenient and financially viable service. They certainly offer cheap calls already but, what else do they need to do to ensure a bright future for VoIP?
As the Internet is a huge public space the VoIP traffic is no more immune from attack than any other data. Security is a concern for many users, particularly in the business community and the means to develop security for users would be a welcome step in securing the long-term future of VoIP.

The ease of use issue may not remain a hindrance to development now that handsets that work on mobile networks and, via WiFi or Bluetooth links, over VoIP are now making an appearance in the shops. This raises the prospect of using reduced rate VoIP services at home, in the office or at a WiFi hotspot, but still retaining the flexibility of mobile coverage when out and about.

Some VoIP providers are now selling these handsets, and have set up joint arrangements with wireless hotspots so that their customers can make and receive calls when out and about without the need for a PC.

Expect to see some of the restrictions of such handsets i.e. difficulties in hotspots that use web pages for authentication to be addressed very soon.

The advance of newer networking technologies will further minimise the distance between fixed, mobile and VoIP services. Wireless broadband services, in particular WiMax, could create city-wide wireless hotspots, making it possible to make mobile VoIP calls in much wider areas.
