When Background Information Does More Harm than Good
Many people make mistakes when they are young that they later come to regret. Unfortunately, the Internet has compounded the problem for many people who have criminal records because those records could now be hovering on one or more Websites, permanently etched into their online biographical space.
Although you may be able to have some criminal records expunged, there is a good chance that non-governmental Websites will pick up your checkered history and preserve it for the most inconvenient of times — such as when you are seeking an important promotion or a new job. Your background records may be playing havoc with your life.
There are a few experts on how background records are handled on the Internet. They may be able to offer you some tips on what to do when your old history crops up. Then again, you may need to look into some reputation management. But one problem with reputation management is that it really cannot make the bad information go away. At best, you can show people your more recent achievements and put your best foot forward.
Some people are truly understanding. If you are sincere and you have learned how to trust good people, many good people will come to trust you. Life has a way of teaching us new habits when we shed old habits. But some people are just mean-spirited busy-bodies who feel compelled to drag your history out at every chance. There isn’t much you can do about them except show your better side.
Learning to judge people on the basis of what they actually do, rather than on the basis of what fear-mongers say about them, is the best example you can offer others in how you want to be treated. As Jesus said, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” If you find yourself dealing with people who would rather humiliate you with the mistakes of your past then you would do yourself a favor by finding new people to be around. Life is too short for you to condemn yourself to that kind of misery. Go meet and be with the people who will see you for who you really are.
