Fats: The Good, The Bad, and Omega 3

This has become a hot topic lately. There is so much talk of
fats, the healthy fats, the bad fats, the trans fats. I have
done some research on fats, trying to keep it simple for us.
Here is some important information I have come up with. Omega 3
has become a favorite topic of mine. It has such amazing health
improvement qualities. Remember, this is for your information
only, and not meant as gospel nor is it meant for diagnostic
purposes.

Saturated fats: Saturated fat is the main dietary cause of high
blood cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends
that you limit your saturated fat intake to 7-10 percent of
total calories (or less) each day. If you have coronary heart
disease or your LDL cholesterol level is 100 mg/dL or greater,
your doctor should recommend the Therapeutic Lifestyle Change
(TLC) Diet. It recommends 25-35 percent of calories from fat,
with less than 7 percent coming from saturated fat. Cholesterol
is limited to less than 200 milligrams a day.

Saturated fat is found mostly in foods from animals and some
plants.

Foods from animals — These include beef, beef fat, veal, lamb,
pork, lard, poultry fat, butter, cream, milk, cheeses and other
dairy products made from whole milk. These foods also contain
dietary cholesterol.

Foods from plants — These include coconut oil, palm oil and
palm kernel oil (often called tropical oils), and cocoa butter.

Hydrogenated fats: During food processing, fats may undergo a
chemical process called hydrogenation. This is common in
margarine and shortening. These fats also raise blood
cholesterol. Use hydrogenated fats only if they contain no more
than two grams of saturated fat per tablespoon. The saturated
fat content of most margarines and spreads is printed on the
package or Nutrition Facts label.

Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats: — Polyunsaturated and
monounsaturated fats are the two unsaturated fats. They’re found
primarily in oils from plants. Polyunsaturated fats — These
include safflower, sesame and sunflower seeds, corn and
soybeans, many nuts and seeds, and their oils.

Monounsaturated fats: — These include canola, olive and peanut
oils, and avocados. Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated
fats may help lower your blood cholesterol level when you use
them in place of saturated fats in your diet. But a moderate
intake of all types of fat is best. Use polyunsaturated or
monounsaturated oils — and margarines and spreads made from
them — in limited amounts. This is recommended in place of
using fats with a high saturated fat content, such as butter,
lard or hydrogenated shortenings.

Since their discovery in the 1970s, the omega-3 essential fatty
acids have generated thousands of studies and clinical trials.

process of the hydrogenation of oils. This solidifies the oil
and limits the body’s ability to regulate cholesterol. These
fats are considered to be the most harmful to one’s health. The
Federal Drug Administration has mandated that the amount of
trans fats be labeled on food products by 2005.

Q: Why should We care about trans fat? A: It’s important to know
about trans fat because there is a direct, proven relationship
between diets high in trans fat content and LDL (”bad”)
cholesterol levels and, therefore, and increased risk of
coronary heart disease - a leading cause of death in the US.

Q: Aren’t all fats bad? A: No. There are “good” fats and “bad”
ones, just like there’s good and bad blood cholesterol.
Saturated fats and trans fat have bad effects on cholesterol
levels. Polyunsaturated fats and monosaturated fats (such as
olive oil, canola oil, soybean oil, and corn oil) have good
effects.

Q: How much trans fat is too much? A: There is research
currently under way to determine this. However, it is true and
accurate to say that the less saturated fat, trans fat and
cholesterol consumed the better. Trans fat while pervasive in
many of the foods we eat is not “essential” to any healthy diet.

Q: How can consumers know if a product contains trans fat if
it’s not identified on the nutrition label? A: Consumers can
know if a food contains trans fat by looking at the ingredient
list on the food label. If the ingredient list includes the
words “shortening,” “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” or
“hydrogenated vegetable oil,” the food contains trans fat.
Because ingredients are listed in descending order of
predominance, smaller amounts are present when the ingredient is
close to the end of the list.

Q: Do restaurants have to list the fat content of their foods?
A: No. But it’s a good tip to always ask which fats are being

Q: Why is it important to read labels? A: Labels provide
valuable information. An informed consumer is able to make

The Adjustable Gastric Band

Many gastric banding surgeries have been performed successfully. And you don’t have to pay through your nose for such surgeries here unlike other countries such as Europe or Asia. Patient undergoing gastric banding surgeries need to follow certain procedures. The patient may be prescribed a liquid-only diet, followed by mushy foods and then solids. This is prescribed for a varied length of time and each surgeon and manufacturer varies.

Some may find that before their first fill that they are still able to eat fairly large portions. This is not surprising since before the fill there is little or no restriction and this is why a proper post-op diet and a good after-care plan is essential to success. Many health practitioners make the first adjustment between 6 - 8 weeks post operatively to allow the stomach time to heal. After that, fills are performed as needed.

For adjustable gastric band, the same effect can be created using a silicone band, which can be adjusted by addition or removal of saline through a port placed just under the skin. This operation can be performed laparoscopically, and is commonly referred to as a “lap band.” The first gastric band was patented in 1985 by Obtech Medical of Sweden (now owned by J&J/Ethicon) and is known as the Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band. An American company, INAMED Health, later designed the BioEnterics LAP-BAND Adjustable Gastric Banding System. The LAP-BAND System was introduced in Europe in 1993. Neither of these bands were initially designed for use with keyhole surgery.

The LAP-BAND System received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use in the United States in June 2001. In 2000, the first lower pressure, wider, one-piece adjustable gastric band called the MIDband was placed in Lyon France Medical Innovation Development[1]. Unlike many of the early bands this was designed specifically for laparoscopic insertion. It has swiftly become one of the leading bands placed in France. There are now many band manufacturers approximately 7-8 in total.

3 Steps To Helping Your Asthmatic Child

The first and most important step to take is to decide to take charge of your child’s asthma. Parents of asthmatic children suffer a range of contradictory feelings. Strongest is the natural concern for their child. Are you giving them the best treatment, or is there something you have not thought of or are unaware of? Then there are the doubts about being over or under protective. If they have non-asthmatic siblings do you treat all of your children the same? Perhaps there is some guilt that asthma may have been inherited and it is your fault your child has the condition.

Let’s take charge of the situation and dispel this myth straight away. You have not willed it onto your child. It is nobody’s fault or a judgement of some sort any more than an inherited ability that makes someone more likely to be good at sports or singing. You can also take charge by educating yourself about the condition. Do not waste time worrying if there are better treatments or medications for your child. Find out. Use the medical profession, library and internet. The best prescription is knowledge.

The next step is to be aware of your child’s health. One problem with having an ill child is their inability to clearly explain how they feel. An asthmatic child may not come to you in the middle of the night and mention difficulty breathing, or persistent coughing. Instead they may leave their condition to worsen until their lungs have expanded enough to start pressing on their stomach. At this point they may mention they feel sick.

Some children just take a rest when their breathing becomes difficult and never mention they feel out of breath.

If you suspect your child may have asthma you probably know the classic signs to look for: coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, changes in color of skin, nails, or lips, and a tightness of the chest. But also be aware there are other signs that suggest there may be a problem: nausea, lethargy, and low appetite. Also notice if your child has to hunch forward as they exhale if they are feeling short of breath.

If possible take a look at your child’s breathing as they sleep. This will enable you to see how they breathe when they are relaxed. Then you will be able to tell when their breathing becomes labored.

Next, ensure your child takes any inhaled medication properly. Many asthma medications are delivered by inhalers and it is often difficult for a child to understand and perform the necessary sequence of breaths to take these medicines. How long did your child take to learn to blow their nose properly? I know of one child who insisted they were holding their breath while they kept their lips firmly together as they breathed through their nose. Many children feel they cannot hold their breath for the required interval and end up dramatically gasping for air. If your asthmatic child has to take medicines through a metered dose inhaler it is often best to use it with a spacer or aero-chamber.

You need to be prepared for an asthma attack. Know what to do. If your child suffers an asthma attack keep calm and resist the urge to cuddle your child. Though this is perfectly natural it will constrict their chest and make it harder for them to breathe.

If you are driving your child to ER or a physician while they are having an asthma attack you must still buckle them into their child seat. Do not hold your child. Imagine what would happen if there was an accident.

To deal with asthma effectively you have to understand the disease and understand your child. You may be tempted to let your doctor make all the decisions, but there is so much more you can do than just administer medication. You can improve the condition by making changes to the home environment, to your child’s diet, to how they breathe, and to the exercise they take. The more you know about asthma the more effectively you can control it.

The Politics Of Massage: Alternative or Mainstream Treatment?

I tend to view massage therapy independently of broader
categories of therapy, healing or other restorative practices or
systems. I am inclined to do this because I am cautious about
allowing massage to be classified as a traditional therapy
versus an alternative therapy.

There are many practitioners who cringe when they see massage
therapy lumped in with “alternative” practices such as
acupuncture, chiropractic or naturopathic health. To some these
smack of quackery, fakery or, in some cases, lunacy. I believe
that this aversion to association with alternative medical
practices is extreme but I concede that a massage therapy purist
could develop such a phobia.

On the other hand, more open-minded massage therapists abhor
associating massage exclusively with clinical practices such as
physical therapy or other forms of rehabilitation. There is some
resentment towards the incorporation of massage therapy into
traditional medicine only because they feel that massage may be
viewed as simply a procedure. This view strikes me as a bit
vindictive but given the historical view of the mainstream
medical industry towards the alternative medical community, some
bitterness can be expected.

I would hate to see massage go the way of today’s politics which
attempt to label every political view as either liberal or
conservative. Massage therapy is neither traditional nor
alternative. Frankly, traditional medicine is, in actuality, an
“alternative” to massage when viewed in an historical context.

The first documented description of massage as a technique or
therapy dates back to 3,000 B.C. in China. The Chinese believed
that all illness was due to an imbalance of “Qi” within the
body. The inequitable distribution of this “life force” or “life
energy” was blamed for all ailments and this philosophy was
absorbed and incorporated by Japanese Buddhist monks into
Japanese massage techniques. This eventually evolved into the
unique Japanese massage therapy called Shiatsu or “finger
pressure.”

At the same time, similar approaches were evolving in India,
eventually becoming the practice of Ayurvedic medicine, or the
“arts of life,” which also utilized massage as an instrumental
healing methodology. Greeks, Romans and even Native Americans
highly valued not just the therapeutic, but also the actual
healing value of massage. Hippocrates himself is quoted as
stating that “anyone wishing to study medicine must master the
art of massage.”

But with the advent of the industrial age and the development of
modern scientific inquiry, massage was relegated to the list of
unenlightened, unsophisticated medical practices. In my opinion,
however, to dismiss the medicinal and restorative benefits of
massage was to dismiss the wisdom of the Ancients. The lack of
modern scientific diagnostic techniques and the inability to
examine the physical being at the cellular level, forced the
earliest physicians to take a macro view of the person since a
micro view was unavailable. That macro view and the knowledge
garnered through the ages is still the essence of the practice
of the ancient art of massage.

That is not to say that the more clinical modern approach to
massage is without merit. On the contrary, contemporary research
has validated many of the formerly unsubstantiated claims of
alternative practitioners. Scientific studies have confirmed the
effectiveness of massage in alleviating some depressive
symptoms, altering the immune system, controlling pain and
reducing stress. As stress is identified as the precipitator of
so many medical problems, physicians are less reluctant to
recommend massage as part of an overall regime to address
certain conditions.

So I echo the plea of Rodney King when he asked, “Can’t we all
just get along?” Massage does not need the blessing of the
medical establishment to claim its place among the healing arts,
thank you. Nor is it the exclusive therapeutic domain of the
alternative community. I am comfortable with claims that massage
can benefit the whole person and I welcome the recognition of
the scientific examiners who methodically study the benefits of
touch for healing. But I intend to plant myself firmly in the
middle and surrender to no particular ideology of massage
therapy. I endorse massage for what it does.

Citizens of the Land of Opportunity

In a crowded, airless room in the city of Philadelphia 228 years ago this week, a group of men solemnly stepped forward, one by one, and affixed their names to a single sheet of paper — each man knowing that if they faltered in their collective vision, purpose, commitment, or action, he had just signed his own death warrant. Yet before they were done, a total of 56 men had signed.

They knew what they wanted: They had a dream, a vision, a goal.

They knew why they wanted it: They had a purpose.

They knew the price and were willing to pay it: They were committed.

They had a plan: They took action.

And they set in motion a never before imagined and still imperfect and incomplete chain of events that continues to this day toward the ever-expanding vision of freedom and justice for all.

They triumphed, and yet their ultimate success remains to be realized. Its completion is a legacy handed down through the generations, to us and through us, and on to those who follow.

This week as we celebrate their vision, purpose, commitment, and action (and as we also honor the succeeding generations who have kept the faith and improved on the dream), consider that it is largely because of their vision, purpose, commitment, and action that you are today a citizen of the Land of Opportunity.

You and I are the recipients of many precious gifts bought by others. Whatever our situations and backgrounds, we enjoy a freedom still only dreamed of in many parts of the world.

But in the midst of the familiar words of the Declaration of Independence, there’s another phrase that goes mostly unnoticed. Thomas Jefferson wrote:

“[A]ll experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.”

It’s another way of saying that, sadly, most people simply aren’t motivated enough to do anything to change the status quo — even if it’s awful, even if they despise it, even if it’s slowly killing them. It’s another way of saying the “comfort zone” rules.

Because freedom and opportunity are our day-to-day reality, we often take them for granted in a way that people in many parts of the world find astounding, even unthinkable. We keep ourselves ignorant of the true value and meaning of these gifts. And we too often waste them by not clearly seeing how precious they are and ACTING upon that — by not reaching out and taking hold of the opportunity that surrounds us and is part of the very air we breathe. The opportunity for life itself — more life, better life, life under no one’s thumb.

As citizens of the Land of Opportunity, though, we have a sacred responsibility NOT to waste what’s been given to us, bought with the blood and sweat of those who went before and longed for by millions around the world. We have a responsibility to lay hold of that limitless opportunity, burst out of our stifling “comfort zones,” and make the most of our freedom — to be, do, and have all we need for all the life we are capable of living.

We have an obligation to create our own success and the opportunity to help others do the same and to weave ALL our individual successes into the glorious, unfinished tapestry of this country’s past, present, and future.

As with the signers of the Declaration and all the heroic men and women who have carried the torch, it all begins with a dream. A vision. A goal.

Just yesterday a very wise person told me, “If you don’t have a dream and a goal that you’re actively working toward, you are trading your life for nothing.”

Think of the signers or of any great achiever in any field of endeavor in any country — anyone you admire, anyone who is successful. What do they all have in common besides dreams, vision, goals, purpose? They all have something called discipline, a word that immediately frightens or repels many (perhaps most) people because when they see or hear it, they think “punishment,” “deprivation.”

They resist the notion of self-discipline because they think it constricts them; they prefer no rules, no plans — just “freedom.” Ironically, though, that kind of “freedom” is simply the right to remain in the “comfort zone” where mediocrity is king. And discipline is the key that unlocks those chains.

What discipline really means is simply this: The ability to give yourself a command and then do it — “to see the job through.”

First you need a plan (command), then action (follow-through). To do that, you need something that’s bigger than yourself to motivate you — your dream, vision, goal, and your purpose. True COMMITMENT to those things, then, means taking ACTION consistently, daily: Giving yourself a command and following through. And to follow through is a definition of the word, “succeed.”

Without this commitment born of your own innermost desires, dreams and goals remain empty wishes. Vision becomes a pathetic pipedream. And purpose? There is none.

You already have within you everything you need to achieve everything you truly want. You are more powerful than you can imagine. But only you can take the action to set that power — and yourself — free.

What do YOU want for your life — for yourself, your loved ones, your community, country, world? What’s your DREAM, VISION, GOAL?

Why do you want those things? What’s your PURPOSE?

What price are you willing to pay? Are you COMMITTED?

Do you have a plan? Are you taking ACTION — DAILY action in following through on your commitment to your own vision and purpose?

We’re at the halfway point of the year. We’re at the time when we celebrate and commemorate one of the world’s great acts of vision, purpose and commitment.

We are at the moment of decision, and you are next in line, facing YOUR choice: Submit to the chains of mediocrity and a lifetime of settling for less than you are capable of being, doing, and having — or claim your power, break free of the insidious oppression of the “comfort zone,” and declare your own independence and right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as YOU define it.

The paper is before you. The pen is in your hand.
