Make A Statement With A Destination Wedding

Filed under: Relationships Parlor — admin at 11:23 pm on Tuesday, June 17, 2008

The newest trend in weddings is to get out of townliterally. Destination weddings are the latest rage because the couple gets to exchange their vows in private or with just a select few friends.

Here’s how to do it.

Getting on a plane

A destination wedding isn’t a destination wedding unless you’re off to somewhere exotic and remote. You might pick a tropical island like Hawaii or somewhere in Bali. Perhaps the rugged mountains of the Pacific Northwest or the deserts of Australia call to you. This is your dream, pick exactly what you want.

Realize that the farther that you go, the less people will want to or be able to come with you. And this might be exactly what you’re looking for–just a simple wedding with you and your soon-to-be spouse.

In either case, you will still want to send out announcements of your wedding date so that your friends and family will know. In many cases, you can get married at the destination wedding, and then have a reception when you get home.

Why these are popular

Destination weddings take away a lot of the traditional planning of the traditional wedding. There aren’t the crowds of people to meet and greet. There aren’t the floral and cake and decoration meetings. In most cases, these resorts will do everything for you so you get to relax and enjoy your day.

And the pictures that you will have from this wedding day. How many others can say that they were married in front of a waterfall or the setting sun on the ocean? It’s the scenery that brings people to destination weddings because it’s unlike anything that they could have created in their hometown.

A move toward ancient culture tradition is also in vogue. Many couples are being married by the native priests and ministers in the traditional ways of the tribes that live there. In Hawaii, you can be married in the Polynesian tradition, with a hula dance and everything.

Being able to invite only those people that you love is a great way to enter into married life together. The settings are intimate and private, so you can just enjoy each other.

Destination weddings can be expensive weddings for your family to attend, so you may want to turn on a video camera when the actual vows are exchanged. Then go on your honeymoon, enjoy yourself, and go back home to celebrate with your family.

What to Drink on the Zone Diet?

Filed under: Cooking Stuff — admin at 5:06 pm on Monday, June 16, 2008

The Zone Diet is founded on the idea of eating a balanced ratio of carbohydrate, protein and fat. By eating in the ratio of 40/30/30, meaning 40 percent carbohydrate and 30 percent each of protein and fat, the idea is that your metabolism is impacted to run at its most efficient level. The diet also emphasizes getting the right amounts of fruit, vegetables and lean sources of protein. The right combination of foods results in an increased metabolism and weight loss. Designing meals that meet these requirements can be tricky, but the program offers a range of ideas. You can also purchase cookbooks with recipes intended for the followers of the diet as well. But some people still wonder what they are allowed to drink when following the diet.

You can still drink juice and either low fat or skim milk, as long as you count the calories and grams of protein, fat and carbohydrates. But since our bodies are made mostly of water, water is the recommended drink. The health benefits of drinking enough water cannot be underestimated. Water helps to flush toxins out of the body, it keeps the cells and metabolism supplies with the water needed to work properly and it quenches thirst better than any other fluid you can ingest. The Zone Diet guidelines require that followers drink at least sixty-four ounces (or eight cups) of fluid every day. If you are one of the many people who simply don’t like the taste of water, there are other options for you.

You can add a squeeze of lemon, lime or orange to your water to give it a little bit of extra flavor. Or, you can purchase bottled waters that have a slightly fruity flavoring to them so that they taste more like a seltzer than plain water. Pour them in a glass full of ice for a refreshing beverage. It’s important, however, to read the labels, even for water. Since the Zone Diet guidelines require you to limit sugar and carbohydrates, you don’t want to take in sugar unknowingly. Carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go and refill it whenever it gets empty. Soon enough you can change your habit of drinking soda, tea or juice, especially when you see the good results in your weight loss efforts.

If you are a coffee or tea drinker, you will need to make some changes as well. The Zone Diet guidelines instruct you to eliminate caffeine from your diet. This change can be difficult and cause withdrawal symptoms like headaches. It might be a good idea to gradually start eliminating caffeine from your diet in the weeks before you begin following the Zone Diet guidelines. Decaffeinated coffee or tea will let you still enjoy the taste of coffee or tea without the caffeine. The same is true of sodas. Regular sodas should be completely eliminated. They simply have too much sugar. Diet sodas come in enough different flavors that you should be able to find one that you like. However, you do need to switch to decaffeinated versions in order to improve your chances of success on the program.

Alcohol is one other beverage that will have to be limited or eliminated. There have been some studies that have shown that moderate alcohol consumption can actually have some positive effects on your health, particularly your heart. If you are currently drinking alcohol as part of a program to protect your cardiovascular health, you shouldn’t stop without discussing it with a health professional first. However, the Zone Diet doesn’t require that you totally eliminate all alcohol from your routine, just that you limit it to occasional use. There’s no reason that you can’t continue to enjoy an alcoholic beverage from time to time. Just keep in mind that the more beverages that you replace with water, the more good you are doing for your body and the faster you are likely to see weight loss success.

Martin Beans shows you how the Zone Diet works at www.enterthezonediet.com - a complete guide on the Zone diet where you’ll learn how to calculate your daily intake of protein, fat and carbs and you’ll find allowed food lists, Zone diet menus and tips that will ensure your success with the program.

Choosing the Best Online Music Service

Filed under: Music Hub — admin at 10:51 am on Saturday, June 14, 2008

Okay, it’s time for me to finally say goodbye to my portable disc player, and join the online and portable music revolution. Okay, the revolution isn’t so new any more, nor is my computer, but as I wade through the sea of options for how to download music, listen to and buy online tracks, I grow more eager to get my feet wet and eventually suit up to take the plunge. But I happen to be a bit more practical than that. So, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time over the last few weeks trying to determine what’s best for my lifestyle, my wallet and my computer.

First thing I realized when searching all of the music services is that things seemed to work a lot smoother with a broadband connection (and most services seem to point that out from the get go). Just like my CD Walkman, the time had come for me to lose my ancient dial-up connection to the online experience. It actually turned out to work in my favor as my cable company gave me a good deal on high-speed, and also threw in a discount on my existing costs for cable TV.

Now that I was “connected” at an acceptable speed to the Web, I had to determine, what I was trying to get out of the online music experience. After some intense melodious soul searching, I realized that the only thing the separated me from the perpetually hip is perhaps the types of music I was searching for, and the amount of time I wanted to spend online searching for music.

The guy who sits next to me has a 60 GB iPod, and is complaining that it is almost full. That’s over seven thousand songs. I don’t know that I would even live long enough to listen to that many songs. My needs were simpler. I had an MP3 player still in the box from two Christmas’ ago, and it promised to hold over 500 songs. That would be perfect for me, at least in the short term.

Next, what was I looking for in my new online music experience? Did I want to listen to music on my PC, in my car or on my MP3 player? Yes to all three. Did I want to listen to the radio while I was on my PC? Again, yes. Did I want to trade music with others online in a peer-to-peer Napster-like environment? Eh, that one scared me a little, and I decided that opening up my files to strangers made me feel dirt, so I put that one on hold.

My next stop in determining how I would “music online” was price. I searched dozens of sites and services, but narrowed my sights to three of the big guys: AOL Music Now, iTunes and Rhapsody Music Service (provided by Real Networks).

I already had AOL, so I signed up for their Music Now product for $8.99/month (that’s in addition to their monthly fee as an ISP). I was able to download songs, listen to them while “offline” and burn them to CD or move them over to my MP3 player for an additional fee per song. That seemed to be standard across most of the services. Music Now was a follow up to the original AOL Music Net, which I actually liked better because it ran locally on machine and the new Web-based Music Now takes much longer. AOL also has a partnership with iTunes, so you can be on AOL, but iTunes will launch and then you’re actually in the iTunes application. It’s confusing. If I want to move my downloaded songs to my MP3 player, the monthly fee jumps to $14.95 per month, and if I want to put them on a CD, I pay and additional 99 cents per track. This is too much money for me. I typically buy one or two CD’s a month, and that would be cheaper than this online service. Not to mention you have to be an existing AOL member (more money per month) in order to even use the product. I’m passing on AOL Music Now.

On to iTunes. Okay, so there is no monthly fee for iTunes. Love that. And I can purchase songs for 99 cents per track. Love that too. But wait. I don’t have an iPod, and iTunes has songs in their proprietary MP4 format. Ugh. The cheapest iPod out there is around $99 (so much for no monthly fee), and it’s not the model I would select. I like my MP3 player. If I already had an iPod, this may be the route I would go, but Apple tends be very inflexible, and I hate to be tied to one provider, player and format. There is also a limit to how you can share the songs on your home network. I feel like even though I own the song, I’m being watched on what I do with it. Good bye big brother.

Rhapsody Music Service from Real Networks. So far they are the least expensive. $9.99 per month and that’s with unlimited access to over 1.3 million songs. I do have to have pay the additional 99 cent fee if I want to burn to CD or transfer to my MP3, but that is the industry standard for paying the artists, and the monthly fee is five dollars less per month than AOL. The music comes over in the more widely supported MP3 format and the songs are mine to rip transfer or share with my other computers on my home network. Like the other two, I can listen to live radio on my pc, but I like the freedom I get with Rhapsody Music Service. I’m not being watched, and the music is mine.

Now that I know how to download music and have chosen Rhapsody Music Service, I’m on my way to joining the new world of portable digital music. I’ve already burned several CD’s for my car, albeit with an older man’s twist on today’s favorites, and transferred those same songs over to my little antiquated MP3 player for those long weekend walks.

Now I’ve got to start looking for a replacement for my VCR. Onward and upward!

My Las Vegas Kayak

Filed under: Diversions + Entertainment, Looking for Adventure, Recreation Center — admin at 4:40 pm on Friday, June 13, 2008

I’m going to take a minute and tell you about an amazing experience I had enjoying the great outdoors. Kayaking has always been an interesting sport for me. Activity wise, it’s great for building upper body strength, and helps combat the sedentary lifestyle many Americans have grown to accept. I can’t stress enough how enjoyable my Las Vegas kayak experience was.

It started out launching from this base camp area at the bottom of the Hoover Dam. From there we kayaked all through Lake Mead and traveled to some really special hot springs in the area. It was completely different than any experience anyone I know has had in Las Vegas, considering most people would rather enjoy the city of sin than the great outdoors. Let me tell you from first hand experience they are really missing out.

The scenery you will take in on your travels is utterly breathtaking, and will leave you with lasting memories for the rest of your life. Please, take my advice, and the next time you are in Nevada, make it a point to check out a Las Vegas kayak tour. No matter if you are young or older, a complete beginner or a seasoned kayaking pro, a Las Vegas kayak trip is a grand experience.

Shooting High Definition Video Footage in Italy

Filed under: The Webcamming Way — admin at 9:03 pm on Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Italy is without question the place to shoot high definition video. Nearly everything in this sun-drenched part of the world cries out for a photo or video capture. My feelings about the country have never wavered from this opinion.

Having said that, I must also admit that Italy - particularly in metropolitan areas - is a problematic country for videographers. Rome, among other Italian cities, has some of the toughest regulations and laws limiting commercial photography.

My husband, Wayne, and I formed our company - VITA Digital Productions - 5 years ago to shoot European video footage - both for our own specialty-market treadmill virtual walks ( www.treadmillwalks.com ) and to sell as stock footage to TV networks around the world ( www.hdeuropeanstockfootage.com ). We made the decision last year to switch over to HD (High Definition) footage after getting our first request for HD footage.

Our biggest concerns, in planning our recent three-week shoot in May 2005, were 1. the safe transport of our video equipment (all in carry-on bags, for obvious reasons!), 2. the ability to shoot in and around tourist-laden locations, and 3. finding ways to get video footage in spite of the stringent regulations enforced in Rome.

Wayne and I have done this several times over the past five years - researching a picture-worthy destination in Europe, making our own travel plans, and packing up like two serendipitous vagabonds to go forth and shoot (you’d just have to know me to appreciate how foreign this is - no pun intended - to my accustomed, orderly way of life). When I look back to the first part of 2001 (pre 9-11) and our two trips to Italy in spring and summer of that year, I realize now how easy it was to get through customs with unusual looking video equipment.

When the two of us travel on a video shoot, we have slowly learned to take the bare minimum of clothing so that we can
accommodate the camera, tripods, SteadiCam apparatus, batteries, filters, wide-angle lens, fluid heads, and tape in addition to spare parts for repairs.

This trip, anticipating problems with airport security, we took pictures of Wayne wearing the SteadiCam vest and showing the camera mounted on the articulated arm. We then tucked the pictures inside the luggage for quick and easy retrieval. When the security agents x-rayed our bags, they never failed to have us open our luggage and inspect the equipment contained. It expedited the process when we were able to produce pictures showing how every piece of equipment fit together. Wayne also mailed a small and inexpensive packet of tools (a screwdriver, a pair of pliers and an Allen wrench) to each of our two hotels so that we would not have those little forbidden items confiscated in the airports. And for some reason, an Allen wrench is an absolute no-no with security agents! I suppose that all of the items could have been purchased in Italy, but time is money on a shoot and we didn’t want to waste time searching for a source in a strange city.

Safely arriving with all of our equipment in Italy, we were ready to begin shooting. We had an itinerary and a shooting agenda for each day, but we knew we would have to build in some flexibility to allow for both the weather and the unexpected. We have been extremely lucky in this regard, even on our two previous shooting trips to England.

So how does a videographer shoot around the tourists? If too many people are between the camera and subject or site being shot, the whole effort can be an utter waste of time. And also, unfortunately, the Italian polizia and carabinieri are quick to tell a videographer or still photographer to fold up that tripod and move on!! They do NOT have any patience with a foreign professional photographer, so common sense and a little stealth are requirements.

For tourist-filled sites, we have found that shooting in the very early morning works well for us. For one thing, Italy is a late-night country, so there are few people (and that includes police) out on the streets at first light. Typically, we would get to a site by 7 AM each morning, shoot for a few hours and then return to the hotel for breakfast: then back out into the streets for more shooting.

The first part of our trip focused on the Amalfi Coast where we filmed, in addition to some incredibly beautiful stock footage, a virtual walk through the Valle di Mulino (the Valley of the Mills) above Amalfi, another through Pompeii, a third on the Isle of Capri, from Anacapri to Torre Damecuta, and yet another from Ravello to Atrani into the Piazza Umberto.

The last two weeks of this trip took us back to Rome, where our focus was HD stock footage and Renaissance art - Bernini
sculptures and Raphael paintings claimed the lion’s share of our time and attention. We spent much of our time filming the Pantheon (Raphael’s Tomb and the occulus); the Church of Santa Maria de Popolo and its Chigi Chapel; Santa Maria della Vittoria with Bernini’s “Ecstasy of St. Teresa”; the Fountain of the Four Rivers in the Piazza Navona; St. Peter’s Basilica and Square; and those delightful Breezy Maniacs of Bernini’s along the bridge to the Castel Sant’Angelo.

We devoted a day filming a virtual walk in the medieval town of Viterbo (just 1.5 hours by train from Rome). An historical note about Viterbo - had John Paul II or Benedict XVI been elected Pope in the 13th century, it would have happened here rather than in Rome. Now a well-preserved provincial village, but in its heyday, Viterbo was Rome’s greatest rival!

Rome was more crowded with tourists during this trip than we’ve ever encountered. Much of that could be attributed to pilgrims
flocking to the Vatican in the month following the death of Pope John Paul II and the subsequent election of Pope Benedict XVI. We’ve also heard that more Americans are traveling to Europe this summer than ever before. Whatever the reason, there were visitors everywhere.

At the end of the trip, we were exhausted but satisfied with the 20 plus hours of High Definition footage we shot along the Amalfi Coast and in Rome. There was an unfortunate incident with a French gendarme in the Charles deGaulle airport, but that will remain a story told within the family!

Is a foreign shoot worth the time, expense, and aggravation? I’ll give you a resounding yes on that one - but with a caveat: pack an extra dose of patience and a big heart, and both will be rewarded many times over!

My husband, Wayne, and I own a video production company that focuses on European travel. In addition to our Virtual Walks Series, we also shoot stock footage of Venice, Rome, the Amalfi Coast, London, and English villages. We have sold our footage to numerous television networks and production houses around the world.

Solar Home Improvements and Tax Deductions

Filed under: Home Improvement Hall — admin at 9:22 pm on Sunday, June 8, 2008

Going solar is all the rage these days with massive financial incentives fueling the fire. Here’s a little trick to write off an additional part of your solar system purchase.

Financing Your Solar Improvements

Improving your home with a solar panel system is financially advantageous these days. The federal government, most states and even cities throw financial breaks at you to promote going solar. With the federal government, you are going to get a $2,000 tax credit, a figure that is subtracted from the amount of tax you owe the IRS at the end of the year. States pursue a variety of plans, but most offer rebates wherein they actually pay for part of your new system. Cities also offer rebates, often by discounting your property taxes.

On top of all of this, you can take advantage of net metering laws in a majority of states. Net metering simply means you can sell your solar electricity to the local utility when you aren’t using it. Known as being on the grid, nothing is more satisfying than watching your utility meter run BACKWARDS during the day! As you might imagine, this has a nice impact on your utility bill at the end of the month.

There is one additional financial trick many people fail to take advantage of when it comes to writing off solar panels and such - financing. Even if you have the cash in your hot little hand, you should consider taking a home equity loans or refinancing your home to pull out cash to pay for the system. Why? The mortgage interest deduction! Improvements to your home are deductible if they are incorporated into your mortgage payment.

Now, you might be rolling your eyes contemplating regarding going through the refinancing process. Don’t. Many federal mortgage institutions are required to write financing for people wanting to improve their home with solar systems. Even better, most of the loans are written at interest rates well below current mortgage rates.

If you are considering doing a solar-based improvement to your home, talk to your lender about financing options. Take advantage of this strategy and you’ll be getting a mortgage tax deduction, tax credit, rebate, property tax discount and selling power to the utility company when you go solar. With so many financial incentives, you have to ask yourself whether you can afford not to go solar.

Reasons Why You Should Niche Your Business

Filed under: Marketing + More — admin at 12:46 pm on Sunday, June 8, 2008

Caution! After reading this article, you may need to adjust your product or service, your advertising, your website, or your target audience a little (or all of them). Fortunately, none of these are set in stone and can usually be changed quite easily.

I’m sure you realize it’s impossible to meet everyone’s needs. So you need to select a target group and attempt to appeal to them and them alone.

This may seem simple at first glance. But, take it to heart; it really is a sure-fire way to increase your sales. Just focus in on one specific area. It is impossible for any one product or service to fill everyone’s needs.

You may be a little skeptical. If this is the right way to do business, why don’t more (or any) of your competitors do it? It’s a good question, and here are a few answers.

1. Your competitors are probably greedy, so they don’t want to take a definitive stance. They want all the customers they can get. Their business is plain vanilla. There is nothing unique about them.

By targeting a select audience, it does seem like you will have to turn away some clients. But the reality is you can’t appeal to everyone anyway. By trying to appeal to everyone, it is likely that you won’t appeal too much of anyone. Differentiating is the key to success in business.

As Jack Trout put it in “The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing”, “When you try to be all things to all people, you inevitably wind up in trouble.”

2. Many businesses are afraid to set themselves apart. This is due in part to being afraid to step aside form the pack. Different scares them. Unique is risky. They have the “follow the herd” mentality.

3. It can take some effort to come up with a well articulated message. And, if it doesn’t work, they will have to revise it. So this takes even more effort.

4. Some of the best messages include a promise. Promises are risky. Therefore,
most people won’t make them.

You stand a better chance of becoming an acknowledged leader in a smaller niche than in a larger one. If you look around at your competition, it is likely that no one has segmented the market and gone after a smaller niche. That means there is a prime opportunity for you if you give this a try.
