Successful Childhood Learning Starts with Reading Aloud

Research has consistently shown that children who love to read
excel in school and continue to excel in higher education and
life in later years. Reading aloud with your child is key to
sparking the passion for reading.

Popular theory in the world of education has long been that a
young child is an empty slate, just waiting to have information
poured into them. That theory has promoted the idea that
learning by rote will make a child smarter, and thus more likely
to succeed. But studies of the last fifteen years or so have
turned such thinking on its ear - the new thought behind early
childhood development is not to shove a book under their noses
and say “learn,” rather, it’s to show your child how to learn,
by reading with them, and forging not just an interest, but a
real pleasure out of what the printed word can bring.

Let’s looks at an example: “The filibuster is a strategy
employed in the United States Senate, whereby a minority can
delay a vote on proposed legislation by making long speeches or
introducing irrelevant issues. A successful filibuster can force
withdrawal of a bill, and filibusters can be ended only by
cloture.”

Pretty interesting, huh? No? Well, to be honest, we didn’t think
it would be. The fact of the matter is, if you don’t have a
passion for politics, a piece of information about a political
process will likely go in one ear and out the other, even if
you’re forced to read the passage more than once. You could read
it two or three times, memorize the words, and even be tested on
them, but will you still remember that information next week?
How about in a month?

When your child goes to school and is told to read several pages
in a book that doesn’t interest them, they’re going through the
exact same thing you just experienced. If there’s no inherent
passion for reading, and no passion for the subject matter, then
there will be minimal retention at the end of it all.

A study of 74 schools by the UK National Foundation for
Educational Research found that “fewer youngsters believe
reading is difficult, compared with 10 years ago. However, there
is a substantial decrease in pupils reading for pleasure. 65% of
9-year-olds and 73% of 11-year-olds said they did not think
reading was difficult, compared with 56% and 62% respectively in
1998. Just over 7 out of 10 of the younger age group enjoy
reading as a pastime, compared with 78% five years ago, while
for 11-year-olds, the proportion has declined from 77% to 65%.
Children said they preferred watching television to going to the
library or reading. But the biggest changes in attitudes were
among boys. In Year 6, only 55% of boys said they enjoyed
stories compared with 70% in 1998.”

Why? Perhaps other statistics in the same report might have some
insight:

  • 24% of children under the age of 4 had television sets
    in their bedrooms
  • More than 50% of children over the
    age of 4 have their own TVs
  • 28% have computer games in
    their rooms
  • 8.5% of under-fours have a VCR in their
    rooms

The Florida Center for Reading Research (FCRR) recommends that
parents read with their child for at least fifteen minutes every
day, all the way through third grade, stating, “Before you read
each book, read the title and look at the cover and pictures
inside. Ask your child what [he or] she thinks the book may be
about. After reading the book, review [his or] her predictions.
Was the prediction right? If not, what happened instead?”

The object in such an exercise is threefold: You make reading an
interactive experience that a child can enjoy much as they do
playing in the yard, you give the child an opportunity to ask
questions about things they don’t understand, and you promote
creative thought within your child, where they learn to assess
what they see, critically appraise it, and think beyond what
they’re seeing on the page.

The FCRR advice goes further, recommending a weekly trip with
your child to the library, and rhyming games that make your
child think about how words are put together, all of which are
intended to show your child that reading is just as much fun
off-the-page as it is on.

The ultimate object is to convince your child to open a book for
fun, in their spare time, and thus begin a lifelong enjoyment of
the written word and the information that books can bring. This
doesn’t just help them at school - according to the NCREL,
readers “have self-confidence that they are effective learners
[and] see themselves as agents able to actualize their
potential.”

It’s important for every parent to realize the value of literacy
in their child, at the earliest age possible, but it’s even more
important to understand the value of comprehension, and how you
can help that seed take root.

Peacock bass fish has earned a reputation in the bass fishing world as ferocious, very powerful, and a bad-tempered sports fish. It behaves like a largemouth bass on steroids, which makes it difficult for anglers to catch. Its strength is estimated to be twice more from other large fish. What seems to make peacock bass fish more powerful than other sports fish is their ability of doubling their strength once they surface and wrestle with the angler for the bait.

Many sport fishers do think that a minute or two of fighting with this large bass fish will make the latter tired easily, but their presumption is not accurate. Peacock bass usually have another shot of bursting power coming from the adrenaline that their body is producing, thus it cannot be as easy as catching a regular black bass.

Biological studies show what a peacock bass is and why it is very different to other fishes in the ocean. They are members of the Cichlids, which are reputed to be the most highly evolved group of fishes. Peacock bass is often classified as a predator, which feeds entirely on small fishes.

It is usually found in the oceans of South America and Amazon. Its speed, strength, size and ferocious nature make it easy to hunt for prey. Similarly, to a largemouth bass with huge, bucket-like mouth, peacock bass do swallow up other fishes of smaller sizes at the same time for their meal.

Three species of these sport fish are found in the Amazon. Brazilian natives as the Cichla Temensis or the “tucunare azul or paca” know one species of the peacock bass. On the other hand, the Spanish-speaking communities consider them as “pavon azul or pinta lapa”. This specie is very sensitive to water conditions and restricted to tropical areas of the Amazon. Its weight is estimated to have an average of 27 pounds.

The second specie is the Cichla Ocellaris, known as the butterfly peacock. Much smaller compared to the pace, it just weighs about 7 to 8 pounds, but they are terrible fighters, ready to engage in a fight for bait.

The third is the Cichla Nigrolineatus, or royal peacock. Its habitat is in fast moving waters and weighs an average of 3 to 4 pounds.

The seasonal cycle of the peacock bass is usually based on the equatorial weather conditions in the Amazon River. Typical of dry and wet seasons, the best time hunting for peacock bass is usually of the first six months of the year, where the water temperature is not so extremely hot.

For easier hunting, anglers are advised to have their bass fishing activities conducted on instances where different rivers in the South American continents reach the lowest water level.

Sports fisher can fish in the Amazon from December through March on the northern area, and from July through November in the southern area. On the black waters of the northwestern Amazonian rivers, however, December through March is the best peacock bass fishing because of the clear waters and the typical dry season, making sport fisher easier for them to hunt the 27-pound peacock bass.

One of the strategies of success in pursuing a peacock bass is the mastering of the fishing technique in relation to the behaviour of the fish. It is advised to at least improve everything an angler knows. They must also take into consideration the biological history of the fish to come up with new techniques and become familiar South American continent’s weather when the peacock bass is found and from this, determine the best season for hunting it.

Lastly, the fishing gears such as rods, reels, and baits must be wisely selected in order to cope up with the style of the peacock bass. When everything is set up and ready, the next question is, can you survive the wildest peacock bass fishing adventure?

Can Cats and Dogs Live Together?

Many people believe that it is impossible for cats and dogs to live together peacefully. Perhaps this belief is brought on by images seen in cartoons or by one or two negative experiences between cats and dogs. But, in reality, it is quite possible for the two species to live together peacefully - and even to live together as friends.

Genetics

Genetically, there are reasons for cats and dogs to dislike each other. By nature, dogs are predators that tend to chase things that move quickly and that are smaller than them. Of course, cats fit this description, making them the perfect play toy for dogs wanting to utilize their predatory skills.

Cats, who are also predatory, can also exhibit stalking behaviours toward dogs; despite the fact the dog is usually much bigger. In addition, cats will defend themselves, so thus begins the rivalry.

Environmental Influence

Of course genetics and instinct alone isn’t the only reason why dogs and cats sometimes don’t get along. During the first 2 to 3 months of an animal’s life, it learns who its friends and its enemies are. Therefore, a puppy raised with cats will most likely tend to get along better with the cats. Similarly, a kitten raised with dogs will not think much of the dogs. In fact, it is often easier to raise a new kitten in a household with dogs than the other way around because cats tend to be more territorial than dogs. A highly predatory dog, however, will make it more difficult to introduce a new kitten to the household.

Training Pets to Live in Peace and Harmony

Teaching cats and dogs that don’t get along with each other to live together can be a somewhat difficult task, but it is possible. The best way to accomplish this is to allow the animals to spend time together while a human chaperone is present. The more time animals spend with one another, the more tolerant they become of the other. In fact, this can often lead to a very affectionate relationship. Puppies and kittens that are raised together have the best chance of developing a positive relationship.

If a dog has been particularly cruel to cats in the past, however, it is probably not a good idea to try to get the two species to co-exist. Even if the dog doesn’t manage to get the cat, it will most likely make the cat’s life difficult by continually chasing after it. Similarly, a puppy might need to be protected from a particularly territorial or mean cat.

Dogs can also be trained to leave cats alone, just as they can be trained to fetch, sit or stand still. For a pet owner who has the time and patience, the dog can be leashed with a training collar. Another person can bring the cat increasingly closer to the dog. If the dog sits still it, should be praised. If it attempts to lunge after the cat, the leash should be pulled and the dog should be told “No. Leave it!” Some dogs learn quickly while others take a little longer.

Another approach for training the dog can also be utilized. This approach uses positive association. Each time the dog is in the same room as the cat, it is provided with extra attention and treats. Soon, the dog realizes having the cat in the room is a good thing because it gets something good out of it. In this way, it positively associates the cat with things that it desires - affection and tasty treats!

Feeding Time

Even cats and dogs that get along might start fighting during mealtime. Most animals are very protective of their food. In addition, they tend to be quite curious about the food the other animal is enjoying. For this reason, it is best to have separate feeding stations for cats and dogs.

It is best to place the cat’s food in a high, hard to reach area. Otherwise, the dog will have a tendency to eat the cat’s food, or to at least try to eat it. Of course, the food should still be placed in an area the cat can easily reach and eat comfortably. Cats don’t generally try to eat dog food. But, in the case of a cat that does, this behaviour should be discouraged. The best way to do this is to feed the two animals at the same time, but in different places.

It is also important to remember that cat and dog food each have different nutrients, so one should not be used in place of the other. Therefore, it is not only necessary to keep the food separate in order for the pets to live in harmony; it is also necessary to keep them healthy.

How To Indulge And Win The Battle Of The Bulge During The Holidays

If you are trying to lose weight, the holidays literally are the
heaviest time of the year.

So how do you eat, drink and be merry while you’re counting
every single calorie? By getting a buddy who will help you make
the right choices bite by bite.

Scientific studies have shown that people who diet with partners
are much more likely to lose weight and to keep it off. And
there’s no more crucial time to have a buddy on your side than
from Thanksgiving to New Year’s.

“During the holidays, you can use all the help you can get,”
says Alan Gettis, a nutritionist and clinical psychologist in
River Edge, N.J. “I urge my clients to get a full-time
year-round a buddy, it could be a husband or a wife, a neighbor
or a friend. I But don’t wait for the first feast to find a
buddy, says Susan Holmberg, a nutritionist and behavioral
therapist in Oradell, N.J. “Once you start overeating, you don’t
want a “Buddy,” she says.

Buddies give you moral support and help you identify bad eating
habits and patterns because they have been there, too, she says.
“You may want to have more than one buddy,” she says. “You can
have one on the phone and one who exercises with you and goes to
parties with you. You can make deals with your buddy where you
both go to the party but only one of you goes through the buffet
line or where you agree to split one meal.”

Buddies also are like therapists and coaches, who listen to you
and keep you on the right path. “Your buddy should be a person
you can share your feelings with and rely on in a pinch without
fear that your feelings will be used as ammunition against you,”
Gettis says.

Holmberg says that using a “Buddy” is particularly helpful to
people who may be reluctant to change because those who sign on
can choose a either real-life buddy, someone in their
geographical area they can meet and exercise with, or select
someone to work with solely online or via the phone. “Sometimes
anonymity is good,” she says. “You are much more likely to try
it if you don’t have to meet the person.”

Gettis points out that with a “Buddy”, “you can find someone
with similar goals, and both of you can support each other.”

Buddies also take on active roles, getting you to stop a bad
habit and replace it with a healthy one. Gettis likens the
process to a marathon, where the runners are tempted to give up
before the 26th mile because it is so difficult to stay the
course. “The 18- to 19-mile mark is the crucial one,” he says.
“During a marathon I was once in, I came upon two guys running -
one was hurting, and the other was encouraging him to keep
running. I followed them for two to three miles, and the one
kept saying, ‘Leave me.’ The other kept saying, ‘I’m not going
to.’ And I thought, ‘What great friends!’ Then I heard the one
hurting say, ‘What’s your name?’”

Perhaps the most important role that buddies play is helping
plan strategies and then making sure that you make them work.
“They can teach you to take baby steps and to change your
environment,” Holmberg says. “For instance, they may suggest
that you keep sneakers in your trunk or put on your gym clothes
as you leave the office so you don’t have an excuse not to
exercise. They can call ahead to the party to check on the menu
and give you a low-cal recipe to bring so there’s at least one
thing that you can eat.”

Holmberg says that some of the changes are so simple that people
overlook them. A buddy may, for instance, suggest that you get
at the end of the buffet line so there is less food available or
help the host wash dishes because if your hands are wet, you are
less likely to nibble on the last remaining crumbs from the
serving dishes. “If you are asked to bring dessert, your buddy
may remind you not to make chocolate chip cookies because the
last time you ate a dozen cookies before you brought them to the
party and nibbled the chips while baking and suggest that
instead you make something like a pie that can’t be nibbled
because it is cut only when served.”

Buddies also can help you practice being assertive, not
aggressive to make significant changes in your diet and your
lifestyle. “By being assertive, you attack the task,” Gettis
says. “By being aggressive, you attack the person. You need to
stand your ground and in a firm but angry voice say: ‘I really
would appreciate it if you would not bring home anything
fattening. You may have had good intentions, but I’d feel better
if you didn’t do it again.’”

So don’t wait until you’re boxed in by back-to-back parties and
surrounded by wall-to-wall goodies to find a buddy. Make an
early New Year’s resolution to do it now, long before the
marathon feasts begin, Gettis says. “You have to be realistic,
so don’t count on losing 10 to 12 pounds during the holidays.
Don’t say you’ll lose 10 pounds during the holidays, and don’t
gain 10 either. And get someone to be your buddy for all 12
months of the year. You have nothing to lose - but weight.”

Citizens of the Land of Opportunity

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” –The Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776

In a crowded, airless room in the city of Philadelphia 228 years ago this week, a group of men solemnly stepped forward, one by one, and affixed their names to a single sheet of paper — each man knowing that if they faltered in their collective vision, purpose, commitment, or action, he had just signed his own death warrant. Yet before they were done, a total of 56 men had signed.

They knew what they wanted: They had a dream, a vision, a goal.

They knew why they wanted it: They had a purpose.

They knew the price and were willing to pay it: They were committed.

They had a plan: They took action.

And they set in motion a never before imagined and still imperfect and incomplete chain of events that continues to this day toward the ever-expanding vision of freedom and justice for all.

They triumphed, and yet their ultimate success remains to be realized. Its completion is a legacy handed down through the generations, to us and through us, and on to those who follow.

This week as we celebrate their vision, purpose, commitment, and action (and as we also honor the succeeding generations who have kept the faith and improved on the dream), consider that it is largely because of their vision, purpose, commitment, and action that you are today a citizen of the Land of Opportunity.

You and I are the recipients of many precious gifts bought by others. Whatever our situations and backgrounds, we enjoy a freedom still only dreamed of in many parts of the world.

But in the midst of the familiar words of the Declaration of Independence, there’s another phrase that goes mostly unnoticed. Thomas Jefferson wrote:

“[A]ll experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.”

It’s another way of saying that, sadly, most people simply aren’t motivated enough to do anything to change the status quo — even if it’s awful, even if they despise it, even if it’s slowly killing them. It’s another way of saying the “comfort zone” rules.

Because freedom and opportunity are our day-to-day reality, we often take them for granted in a way that people in many parts of the world find astounding, even unthinkable. We keep ourselves ignorant of the true value and meaning of these gifts. And we too often waste them by not clearly seeing how precious they are and ACTING upon that — by not reaching out and taking hold of the opportunity that surrounds us and is part of the very air we breathe. The opportunity for life itself — more life, better life, life under no one’s thumb.

As citizens of the Land of Opportunity, though, we have a sacred responsibility NOT to waste what’s been given to us, bought with the blood and sweat of those who went before and longed for by millions around the world. We have a responsibility to lay hold of that limitless opportunity, burst out of our stifling “comfort zones,” and make the most of our freedom — to be, do, and have all we need for all the life we are capable of living.

We have an obligation to create our own success and the opportunity to help others do the same and to weave ALL our individual successes into the glorious, unfinished tapestry of this country’s past, present, and future.

As with the signers of the Declaration and all the heroic men and women who have carried the torch, it all begins with a dream. A vision. A goal.

Just yesterday a very wise person told me, “If you don’t have a dream and a goal that you’re actively working toward, you are trading your life for nothing.”

Think of the signers or of any great achiever in any field of endeavor in any country — anyone you admire, anyone who is successful. What do they all have in common besides dreams, vision, goals, purpose? They all have something called discipline, a word that immediately frightens or repels many (perhaps most) people because when they see or hear it, they think “punishment,” “deprivation.”

They resist the notion of self-discipline because they think it constricts them; they prefer no rules, no plans — just “freedom.” Ironically, though, that kind of “freedom” is simply the right to remain in the “comfort zone” where mediocrity is king. And discipline is the key that unlocks those chains.

What discipline really means is simply this: The ability to give yourself a command and then do it — “to see the job through.”

First you need a plan (command), then action (follow-through). To do that, you need something that’s bigger than yourself to motivate you — your dream, vision, goal, and your purpose. True COMMITMENT to those things, then, means taking ACTION consistently, daily: Giving yourself a command and following through. And to follow through is a definition of the word, “succeed.”

Without this commitment born of your own innermost desires, dreams and goals remain empty wishes. Vision becomes a pathetic pipedream. And purpose? There is none.

You already have within you everything you need to achieve everything you truly want. You are more powerful than you can imagine. But only you can take the action to set that power — and yourself — free.

What do YOU want for your life — for yourself, your loved ones, your community, country, world? What’s your DREAM, VISION, GOAL?

Why do you want those things? What’s your PURPOSE?

What price are you willing to pay? Are you COMMITTED?

Do you have a plan? Are you taking ACTION — DAILY action in following through on your commitment to your own vision and purpose?

We’re at the halfway point of the year. We’re at the time when we celebrate and commemorate one of the world’s great acts of vision, purpose and commitment.

We are at the moment of decision, and you are next in line, facing YOUR choice: Submit to the chains of mediocrity and a lifetime of settling for less than you are capable of being, doing, and having — or claim your power, break free of the insidious oppression of the “comfort zone,” and declare your own independence and right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as YOU define it.

The paper is before you. The pen is in your hand.

Why Online Education Is More Important Than Food Or Drink

Focusing on the importance of online education is why I ask you
to step back in time to when your children were babies. Remember
when you taught them to talk/walk. Remember hearing babys first
word like dada/mama one of the most pleasurable experiences in
your life. Remember that special moment when baby took his/her
first steps where you waited in anticipation to welcome them
with open arms of which baby fell into after the third step.

Remember the time when your back was turned for a split second
and baby had scaled the height of the staircase causing panic
and hysteria. You would beg baby to stay put while you
challenged those stairs at a pace beyond belief to secure babys
safety. Remember the nights you paced the floor trying to ease
babys pains.

Can you remember what your child found important in their early
years of growing up? Well let me remind you, it was their age.
Numbers played an important role and meant so much to the
children e.g. if you asked your child their age you got the
exact figures like 5 years and 19 days old. Sense of power was
given to the oldest of the street gang because the leader was 5
days older than contester.

If your child had a scuffle with another kid and come of the
worst those words from mum/dad like well go hit them back were
useless because you had the famous words thrown back into your
face, I cant they are ten days older than me. So you see how
important numbers meant to your child when growing up. Why
change things now when they are even more essential than you
could imagine. Online education besides eating and drinking is
the next best thing to survival.

Why is education more important than food and drink. Without it
no decent meal on the table.

Caring for your teen the right way is to encourage them to
further their education. Without doubt this will prove to be the
best parental move you could ever make. If baby is still a
toddler then nurture them with more knowledge. Remember as vital
education is, children need to grow up in the way nature

and how it works meaning no knowledge no hope. I also feel the
same but hey think about it, it is not a bad thing to know a
little more.

Just a reminder, we queue outside our home towns travelling
hundreds of miles to keep a dental appointment. Patient lists as
long as your arm is still on the increase for hospital
treatment. And I am afraid the education system will be next
when a time limit is imposed on when we can or can not further
our education. Unless you do something fast expect to stand in
that forever growing queue as long as the china wall to collect
your social security.

Not Blind, Just No Vision

Helen Keller once remarked that there was one thing she knew of that was worse than being blind; it was to be able to see but have no vision.

In case you do not know the story of Helen Keller, she was less than two years old when she suddenly came down with a fever that left her unconscious. The fever left just as suddenly. But she was left blinded and, very soon after, also became deaf. Despite these handicaps, she went on to live a passionate, meaningful and important life.

This is one of my own favorite and oft repeated sayings, “A person without a definite purpose in life is more handicapped than the most disadvantaged or disabled.”

This is the sad, sad, sad truth about most people’s lives…

They have eyes that work; they can see, but they have no vision.

They have ears that work; they can hear, but choose not to listen.

They have a tongue that works; they can speak, but have nothing to say.

The vast majority of people lead mediocre and purposeless lives. They are stuck in this mediocrity because they have no vision for their lives. They are mired in this mediocrity because they refuse to listen to the quiet internal voice that keeps telling them that there must be a better way. They are trapped in mediocrity because they have not the courage to gather their voice and speak their truth; instead they mumble/repeat the inanities learned from the likewise mediocre folks they hang around with as they fulfill the oft repeated truism, ‘misery loves company’.

Thoreau wrote that most people lead lives of quiet desperation.

People are so desperate for a vision to lead their lives by that they follow mendacious politicians that are even more mediocre than they themselves are.

People are so desperate for a message to give meaning to their lives that they buy into whatever story they are fed.

Desperate and mediocre people hang around in packs sharing the BS, lies and stories hoping to find succor in being a part of the commonality of mediocrity.

Happy, successful, fulfilled, self-destined and self-motivated people do not mind solitude and quiet. They have no need to fill up empty hours with noise to cover up the still quiet internal voice. They have no need to stuff their days with the eye candy of television to hide from the fact that they have no inner vision. They have no need to continuously chatter loud inanities in an attempt to disguise their lack of message.

Thoreau also wrote, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear.”

Do you want to come to the end of your life only to find that you have not lived; you have only merely existed?

If you want to be fulfilled, to live a happy life, to be successful and to have prosperity, then you must develop your own vision and your own message. You must become your own disciple and follow your own truth.

Turn off your television and turn on your inner vision. Find or create your own vision. Without this vision, you cannot see where you are going and it is most unlikely that you will ever end where you want to be.

Your life will have meaning and purpose only when you assign it a message. Stop buying into other people’s stories. Write your own script. Examine your core beliefs and discard those that do not serve you.

You will be fulfilled only when you discover or design your own truth and then, live it. Only you can decide what is true and meaningful for you. Happiness is not found in any philosophy that is offered to you. It is not ‘on sale’ at the mall or superstore. No one can give it to you. It is only found within your own heart.

Are you after prosperity? An abundance of all the good things that life has to offer? A way out of mediocrity?

You will find that life offers you prosperity as soon as you use your will to create a congruency of ideal (vision), word (thought) and deed (action). It really is up to you.

Take responsibility now for your life.
